This magnificent Beyer-Garratt GL class locomotive was built by The Beyer Peacock Company at Gorton in the City of Manchester and is now externally restored to its builder’s photo livery and displayed at the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry. Built in 1930, the locomotive was used on the South African Railway Durban - Cato Ridge section of the Natal main line until 1968 and then on the Stanger-Empangani route until withdrawal in 1972, it returned to England in 1984 - all 214 tons of it!
