SP #3197 was one of a group of three GP40P-2's purchased by the SP in the mid-70's and the last passenger power the road would aquire. The locomotive was one of three SP units to wear a special paint job for the Bi-Centential.

Where once there was only one commuter carrier, Southern Pacific between San Jose and San Francisco, today there are three: Caltrain (former SP), Altamont Commuter Express, and the newest, SMART (Sonoma-Marin Rapid Transit).
