The rear end of an empty coal train from Big Stone City, SD cruises past a rural crossing to the east of Marmarth. Once a bustling city of over 1,000 due to being a division point on the Milwaukee Road's mainline to the Pacific Northwest and housing a yard with a roundhouse and turntable, Marmarth today, with a dilapidated downtown and a declining population of about 100, is a shell of its former self.
