| MWRC #6 "Kancamagus" is typical of the locomotives at Mt. Washington. Built in 1874, she has a sharply tilted boiler to maintain even water distribution on the mountain. Although she's called an 0-2-2-0, she really has no conventional drivers. The 4 wheels you see are free floating and serve only to support the weight of the engine on the track. Her 2 pairs of cylinders drive cog wheels under the engine through a gearing mechanism. The cog wheels mesh with the center cog rack on the track to provide the necessary traction. One other thing...she has no couplers. She pushes her coach with a rubber bumper. The only physical connections are an emergency signal cord and a steam hose for heat in the winter. |
