    Remarks & Notes
I had been trying to capture this shot on a sunny morning for more than two years, but until the 20th the proper circumstances had not come together. Amtrak Cascades #513 was running about 25 minutes late as it cruised along the shore of Samish Bay with snow all the way down to the water line. A low deck of clouds hanging over the middle of the bay enhanced the scene by tinting the water an unusual color. Air temperature when I took the photo: +11F. The train departed Bellingham about 10 minutes late and was further delayed after having to get talked by a red signal at South South Bellingham because the DS couldn't get the turnout to lock. The train would later incur further delay after meeting a late-running #510 at Stanwood, being forced to back out the north end of the siding because South Stanwood also wouldn't lock.

From Vancouver, BC, to Eugene, OR, this route runs along stretches of Puget Sound and the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. The TALGO trainsets that were the line's backbone for many years were withdrawn from service after they were cited in the 2017 crash

Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.
