After making the long climb from the Columbia River up through Trinidad Loop and past Crater Lake, the engineer of an eastbound stack train has notched out the three units under his command for the 60mph run to Spokane. The second unit, an ailing NS Catfish, has been spewing smoke for miles, as clearly evidenced by the trail of smoke stretching back to the horizon.
