Want to buy a steam engine? This locomotive is for sale. 2859 is a GWR heavy freight engine built at Swindon in May 1918, to a 1903 Churchward design. The cost then was ￡4,992 for the engine and ￡956 for the tender. In 1906, an engine of this class hauled 2,010 tons on a test train, a steam haulage record in Britain which lasted 80 years. This was the last locomotive repaired at the Stafford Road Works, Wolverhampton in 1964. Withdrawn in December 1964 after travelling 1,345,561 miles, she travelled 130 miles in 1965 to Woodham's scrapyard at Barry. In 1987, the Llangollen Railway Great Western Locomotive Group bought 2859 from the Scrap yard, since then it has been cosmetically restored, and is at present in Llangollen yard.
