The Future of the Mt. Washington Cog Railway. The Mount Washington Cog Railway's Diesel Locomotive M-1 descends off Jacob's Ladder with the final train of the day. In the distance, a tiny steamer can be seen following slowly behind on Long Trestle. In the near future, scenes like this will be a memory as distant as the steamer in this photo. The railroad has been very pleased with the peformance of M-1 as a prototype and there are now two similar units in the final stages of completion in the shops at Marshfield Station. They are scheduled to go on line in just a couple of weeks. When that happens, the Cog will be primarily a diesel operation. The first trip of each day will be powered by steam and all subsequent trips will look like the one seen here.
Beautiful mountain scenery has made this small state a draw for rail buffs to ride the Mount Washington Cog Railway and the Conway Scenic, among others.
