    Remarks & Notes
The last operational ball signal in the United States shows stops at the Boston & Maine/Maine Central diamond in Whitefield, NH as a National Historic Site. The signal was built in 1875 according to the plaque at the site. The track that runs off the bottom left corner of the photo is the Maine Central's line between St. Johnsbury, VT (away) and Portland, ME (behind) while the other is the Boston & Maine's line between Wells River, VT (away) and Berlin, NH (behind). The ex-B&M station which is now a Dunkin Donuts can be seen by the crossing in the distance while the skyline of downtown Whitefield is on the MEC. Both lines are now out of service and are used for car storage between Whitefield and the New Hampshire Central/Conway Scenic interchange at Hazens. Click here to see Don Haskel's photo of the signal still in service in July 1981.
