On the plains of Inner Mongolia, the gatekeeper at the west end of Baomutu siding raises the manual crossing gates after the passage of a westbound freight train. Gatekeepers on the Jitong Railway lived in two-room brick huts and continuously staffed their crossing for $75US per month. Baomutu has since been transformed into a busy yard and junction with the new line to Chifeng, and this rural crossing was likely replaced with a modern overpass.
