At 1510 feet in length and built in 1846, Arthington Viaduct, built 1846, crosses the River Wharfe from North Yorkshire into West Yorkshire. It was engineered by Thomas Granger and built by James Bray for the (then) Leeds & Thirsk Railway. The 21 arches needed over 50,000 tons of stone to construct. I took my Wellington boots, waded into the river (to the delight of my dog) and got both smoke AND a glint for my troubles on that beautiful morning as 'Ollie' headed for Leeds from Harrogate. The island in the foreground was washed away by flood water the following day and I'd have been up to my neck in water!
