| The ex Calumet & Hecla Mining Co. No. 3 "Torch Lake" eases its passenger train past the Farris Windmill, one of the many unique structures at Dearborn Michigan's Greenfield Village. The "Torch" is the only remaining example of a locomotive type known as the "Mason Bogie". The "Bogies" were similar in configuration to Forney locomotives except that their driving wheels were articulating, to permit operations on track with really tight curves. The design proved popular with some inner city and elevated railways where exactly that type of track existed. Alas, it didn't prove popular anywhere else and the last one rolled off the line in 1890. The one you see here was built in 1873 and was recently reboilered by the folks at Greenfield Village. She's immaculately cared for by the staff there. It is highly unusual to see a rare railroad relic such as this in operation on a regular basis. |
