| On a cold but spectacularly clear January day a big eastbound Pan Am freight hammers through town on the old Boston & Maine mainline enroute to East Deerfield Yard. This line was first laid down by the Troy & Boston Railroad in 1852, but not until the 4.75 mile long Hoosac Tunnel was completed in 1875 (after 27 years and 193 lives lost) was a through route completed all the way to Boston. In 1887 the various connections were absorbed under the Fitchburg Railroad banner which finally came under the aegis of the B&M in 1900. In 2010 the line is officially the Pan Am Southern a 50/50 partnership between Norfolk Southern and Pan Am Railways. The unique home to the right was built in 1853 (only one year after the railroad) and is known as the Estabrook Octagon House.
