A two-and-a-half hour late westbound Empire Builder pulls into Grand Forks on a crisp spring morning. Not helping the situation is a slow order along this three-mile stretch of track into the station.

The wide open spaces of the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma have little service - one train for the entire state. South Dakota has none.
