Remarks & Notes

Crossing the Rio Animas. Eureka & Palisade #4 leaves the dusty mining town of Silverton, Colorado behind her as she crosses the Animas River to begin her southbound journey to Durango. The remnants of Silverton's mining history can be seen in the hills around the periphery of town, where mine shafts, tailing piles and some structures dot the landscape. The remains of one such structure, the North Star Mill, are readily apparent on the left side of the photo at the bottom of the hillside. The aptly named Rio de las Animas Perdidas (River of the Lost Souls) flows through town with a bit of a greenish tint, perhaps indicating the strong presence of minerals excavated over the past century.
