Moving along at about 10 mph, a pair of Missouri Pacific GP38-2s lead Union Pacific's Provo-Salt Lake City local north along the old Provo Subdivision between Cutler (Lehi) and Mount (summit). The UP and D&RGW implemented a trackage rights agreement in 1985 that moved UP's traffic over to the parallel D&RGW mainline. When the Grande occasionally closed its own mainline for work windows, the UP would utilize its own longer, slower, and steeper routing to Salt Lake City. Pictured here, the local has a long cut of Minntac iron ore empties climbing the 1.18% grade at milepost P-772.75, approaching the Alpine Highway crossing on State Road 92, northwest of Lehi City. The Wasatch Front offered a stunning backdrop for this rare move on February 28, 1986.
