Once the merger between Seaboard Air Line and Atlantic Coast Line was accomplished on July 1, 1967, locomotives for both roads were quickly re-lettered and re-numbered. The locomotives belonging to Seaboard received what became known as "the split image" paint scheme thereby remaining in their Seaboard colors but were simply re-lettered SCL and re-numbered accordingly. Here we see ex-SAL E7A 3040 re-lettered SCL and re-numbered 566 at Raleigh, NC on local passenger train No. 3. This unit sported an experimental aluminum sides paint scheme with the expectation that there would be reduced costs when repainting was required. This unit and SCL 567 (ex-SAL 3041) which also shared this same scheme were ultimately repainted SCL black and yellow in 1968.
