With 1/3rd of its trip in the books, UP 844 pulls the Shiloh Limited away from its Boonville service stop amid crowds of onlookers. The entire 17 car train can be seen from this lofty perch. Boonville once hosted both the Katy and the Mopac. The Mopac followed the south bank of the Missouri River through town while the MKT crossed the river on the historic lift bridge in the background. After the UP-MKT merger, the already dead Katy line was abandoned and made into a state-long bike trail. The bridge, however, was not used on the trail for obvious reasons, and the highway bridge, on which this picture was taken, supported the Katy Trail instead. The lift bridge now just stands as a reminder of the once proud Katy. The Boy Scouts of America engine, UP 2010, is behind the 844.
