Remarks & Notes

This is a staged L&N p.r. photo. The young girl waving to the engineer is standing alongside the double-tracked main line to Nashville--a few miles south of Louisville--for no apparent reason. This is train 99, the Pan-American. The "Pan" was the road's daily Cincinnati-New Orleans "flagship" varnish haul. Dieselized since 1942, the Pan is a hefty 17 cars long today, indicative of its popularity. There are no lightweight cars in the consist since there were then very few on the L&N roster. The two E7s are painted blue and silver for service on the Humming Bird and Georgian streamliners.
