By June of 1984, the Union Pacific rostered only one active EMD GP7. My dad and I received a call from a UP hogger that UP 121 was headed our way on a local freight from Salt Lake City. We arrived at Provo Yard in time to catch the crew moving the power toward the fuel and sanding facility. Apparently the 121 would serve another four weeks before retirement. It was built new as the UP 721 by EMD in Oct. 1953. During its service life it had a few interesting details including long hood forward operation, a full pilot snow plow, 24" exhaust extensions, and a Mars warning light. Sadly, it would be scrapped by the Erman Corporation in Turner, Kansas by Aug. 1985.
