      Oversize load
On the afternoon of August 11, 2004, Denver and Rio Grande Western GP30 No. 3011 is on its way to the Colorado railroad Museum on the streets. With no outside rail connection, the locomotive was temporarily stored at the Coors Brewery complex, which has its own railroad, and then trucked the short distance to the museum. Two lowboy heavy-duty trailers were loaded with the locomotive, with the truckless engine spanning the two. The rear trailer was used backward and attached to the locomotive frame, while the front trailer pivoted around turns. The forward trailer also carried the front Blomberg truck, while another semi carried the rear truck. Here, the whole entourage sits in front of the CRM, waiting to enter the museum grounds. It is sitting in the wrong lane, because the semi will need as much right turning distance as it can get as it passes through a temporary opening in the museum’s fencing. OmniTrax graciously donated the Rio Grande locomotive to CRM; it’s going to take a bit of work to get the 3011 restored, but it will make a great display of second-generation Rio Grande motive power when finished.

Pictures of things often unseen in the world of railroading. Interesting equipment, operations, and people that help the railroad go around.
