Sometimes, one has to pay a small price in order to get 'the shot'... In this case, it was nearly a 300' climb only for it to start raining when the train came. It added drama nevertheless, but the slide back down wasn't too cool!
In this scene, heavy loaded coal drag No. 810 soars across the massive Black Lick viaduct in Kegley, W.Va., on the former Virginian Railroad, with long train en-route to be exported at Lamberts Point. Already on a 0.6% grade with at least 18,000 tons, the two locomotives are down to a crawl, as they battle the hill, barely making it before a stall-out occurred. After topping the hill, it will be an all down-grade run to Narrows, where the train will once again ascend to Blackburg back on the rails of the former Virginian.
