Remarks & Notes

Fort Worth, we have a problem. Diesel fuel cascades from the walkway of BNSF 4019 as it departs Grass Lake, CA, following a stop to shut down the unit. Joel Hawthorn, Robert Scott and myself had photographed this train a short time before at Cougar and observed diesel pouring out of the unit's flank, accompanied by a cloud of white vapor floating above the train. Concerned that the unit could burst into flames at any moment, we called this in to UP's emergency line; within moments the crew was alerted to the issue and brought the train to a stop. The 4019 was shut down to stop the leak and led the rest of the way to Klamath Falls on batteries, but even with the power off fuel continued to drip onto the ties; note how the rear of the 4019 and the trailing unit are both shiny from the "shower" they've received over the previous ten or so miles. Interestingly, the 4019's flank clearly indicates the unit had once before experienced a combustion incident.
