        Remarks & Notes
The all-coach, extra-fare El Capitan is about to enter the newer of the two tunnels at the summit of Raton Pass on its way west. The older wood-lined tunnel was abandoned in 1949 and plugged in 1953 due to maintenance problems and declining traffic. The newer tunnel is still in use by Amtrak's Southwest Chief. The sign adjacent to the diesels reads "Lower Extension Stack Here".
