        Remarks & Notes
RARELY-PHOTOGRAPHED ROCKS. In the wilds of the Adirondack Mountains, the hearty soul may find seemingly endless photographic excitement. Navigating the grid of public and private lands to find "just the right spot" takes effort. But, witness this view of Adirondack Scenic No. 1835 heading south in perfect sunlight through one of the several massive wilderness rock cuts near Big Moose Station. On this day, the long hike into the wilds paid off, and fellow Railpictures contributor John Sesonske and I were able to gun off a series of beautiful photos in these rarely-photographed marvels of engineering. The several rock cliffs in this vicinity are nearly twice as high as the modern railroad equipment passing through them! This stretch of track was constructed in 1892 under the command of Chief Engineer Herschel Roberts. He was under the employ of Dr. William Seward Webb, builder of the line. Published accounts indicate that a barrel of beer was carried on the work train from Fulton Chain (Thendara) every morning. The beer was placed an "optimistic" distance from the end of track. If the track gang reached the keg by the end of the day, the men were rewarded with the benefit of consuming the beverage therein. Though a group of snowmobile and bicycle enthusiasts has lobbied intensely for the removal of this state-owned line, the New York Department of Transportation confirmed in the summer of 2014 that the tracks will stay in place between Remsen and Tupper Lake, New York. The fight is now on to save the northern part of Dr. Webb's railroad between Tupper Lake and Lake Placid, home to the 1932 and 1980 Olympics. Image ?2013 Aaron Keller.
