A late night Montauk bound train crosses over the Shinnecock Canal, the site of one of the more prolific bridges on the LIRR. The canal, opened in 1892, provides a shortcut between Peconic Bay and the Atlantic, but provides only about 22 feet of clearance under the railroad bridge. The present bridge was built in the early 1930s, replacing an earlier truss bridge of a similar design.
