Vermont Railway and Vermont Rail System are kicking off the Golden 50th Anniversary of the rail company - January 6, 1964 to January 6, 2014. In honor of the anniversary, VRS had GP40-2LW 311 painted in a special scheme (The first locomotive to wear the full Vermont Rail System name) and named after founder Jay Wulfson's wife, Joan Wulfson. The locomotive was displayed at the ceremony to kick off a year-long celebration that will include passenger specials pulled by the 311. The end drumheads will be removed for the unit to be placed in revenue service, however be restored for the passenger specials throughout the year.
