Dakota Southern SD9, 4427, lays over just east of Kimball, SD, in the last light of the day. The elevator in the background is Liberty Grain's Kimball Elevator that loads out shuttle trains off the BNSF at Mitchell, SD, the eastern end of the Dakota Southern. The state of South Dakota owns this ex-MILW line and rehabbed the line in 2012 with a federal grant. The state is planning to continue this rehab project across the Missouri into West River to give access for shipping crops from this fairly remote part of the state.
