Got a hopper in the dirt? That's no problem if you've also got a big hook. And the Nevada Northern Railway Museum does have a big one....a 100-tonner, as a matter of fact. This unit was built for the railway back in 1907 by Industrial Works of Bay City Michigan, and she's been on the property ever since. Although she's well over 100 year old and is used primarily for demonstrations these days, she's definitely not a toy. She's still got a 100 ton lifting capacity out to a 17 foot radius and can still be used for most any kind of job for which the museum might require a crane, either in the yard, or out on the line. She requires about 3 hours and a crew of 5-6 people to steam up and set up. As can be seen in this photo, she not only has outriggers that must be set to stabilize her, but there are also turnbuckle clamps that virtually lock her onto the rails. The operators in the cab obviously need to not only be skilled in the handling of the various levers and other controls, but they also need to be extremely careful. There are a lot of moving parts in and around that cab which don't have any sort of guards on them. A misplaced hand or foot could mean a very bad day. There was no Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) back when this baby was built.
