A week after chasing one of the largest steam locomotives as Union Pacific "Big Boy" 4014 was towed back to Wyoming for restoration, I had the pleasure of photographing a very small steam engine - Disneyland Railroad #4, the "Ernest Marsh," a 3' gauge engine that was on display at Fullerton Railroad Days. This diminutive gem was built by Baldwin in April 1925 as an 0-4-0 for the Raritan River Sand Company in New Jersey. After it was acquired by Disney in the 1950s, the locomotive was extensively rebuilt, including converting it to a 2-4-0. The rebuilt engine, named for Santa Fe president Ernest S. Marsh, entered service as Santa Fe & Disneyland #4 on July 25th, 1959, and is one of five steam locomotives in service at Anaheim's Disneyland park.
