| "City of Claxton: Fruitcake Capital of the World" proclaims the water tower in downtown Claxton. Two bakeries in the small Georgia town account for 4 million pounds of fruitcake production each year. Meanwhile, the Georgia Central trundles through town on their recently relocated mainline utilizing U23B's originally built for the Southern Railway in the mid 1970's. US Highway 280 was widened during the past three years to create 5 lanes through town. The three far right lanes seen here were formerly Georgia Central/ CSX/ Seaboard Airline trackage. The new alignment is straighter and flatter. Today's westbound L783 turn is led by U23B's 3911 and 3946 and features a hefty 62-car length train. The head 30 car lengths includes intermodal traffic bound for the Cordele (GA) inland port from Savannah on the Heart of Georgia Railroad. There were 81 individual containers on the train (42- 20 footers and 39- 40 footers): ironic in that the highway now has more capacity, but what would be vehicular traffic is being moved on the train instead. |
