Historically, logging railroads tended to roster an eclectic mix of power for a variety of applications, from deep-woods log recovery, to main-line transport and yard switching. In that tradition, the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad rosters no fewer than 5 operable steam engines, including a 2-8-2 tender locomotive, a 2-8-2T saddle tanker, a 3-Truck Heisler, a 3-Truck Willamette, and the only operable 3-Truck Climax in the US. The railroad also has another rod engine and a 3-Truck Shay, both of which are kept under cover, and both of which have hauled their tourist trains in the past. The collection of power at the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad is arguably the most complete collection of operable logging locomotives in the entire US.
