In 1965/66, the South African Railways (SAR) imported sixty five type U20C diesels from General Electric in the USA. These veteran locomotives have now all been withdrawn from service, but some have found a new lease on life with private operators. This example, 33-041, still wearing its original SAR red livery, is sitting outside the Transnet Engineering workshops at Koedoespoort in Pretoria, where it will be completely overhauled for sale to Trans Namib in Namibia. Behind the 33 is brand new class 18E 18 810, rebuilt from a class 6E1, as well as rebuilt class 34-400 GE U26C, no. 34-451. Further back is another new 18E.
