Assigned to pusher service out of Rio Grande’s North Yards, Krauss-Maffei 4003 snubs up to one of the railroad’s colorful cabooses on October 6, 1963. The gentleman in the driver’s seat may well be a technician from the builder’s plant in Munich, Germany. The Grande is growing weary of its diesel-hydraulic experiment, and by next year the 4003 and its two sisters will be sold to SP, which will have more patience, but little more success, with the temperamental foreigners.
