Was this a forerunner of things to come, when the D&RGW acquired the Southern Pacific in 1988? Participating in the low-speed (and low gear) wheel lift tests at Sacramento in March 1964 were these two Krauss-Maffei’s from the D&RGW. The D&RGW and SP received their first K-M’s in late 1961 from Germany, and by Jan. 1964 the Rio Grande had had enough of the overheating K-M’s due to so many tunnels and high altitude where sufficient cooling air couldn’t be drawn in for the high rpm Maybech diesels. Much to Rio Grande’s relief, SP bought their 3 K-M’s.
