August 28 and 29, 1976 saw former 4449 GS-4 head up an excursion from Atlanta, GA to Alexandria, VA in order to get the big GS-4 back to the American Freedom Train. Here 4449 has just completed her two day excursion and is flanked by some dirty Southern FP7's (Amtrak had yet to take over Southern, or Southern had yet to join Amtrak) with the northbound 'Piedmont.' The section of this trip from Charlottesville, VA north is now the stuff of legend, except it's all true. Story goes that Graham Claytor got off the train in Charlottesville to chase into Alexandria, but was never able to catch back up to the 4449. Doyle McCormack unleashed the LIMA Super Power GS-4 and the speedometer reached northwards of 79 MPH.
