Covered in dust and in very poor condition now, these two examples of South African Railway electric motive power history are still standing in a disused Goods Shed at Danskraal / Ladysmith. Front left is Class ES Shunter, E518, centre cab electric shunting locomotive built in 1952 and known to their crews as “Studebakers”. Behind the ES Shunter is Class 1E, E25, built in 1923 by Swiss Locomotive & Machine Works. The Class 1E locomotives were the first electric locomotives placed in Service by SAR. During 2014 they formed part of a Go Dove auction lot (for scrap), which included a Class 35 diesel locomotive and a burnt out Class 6E1. It appears that the Class 35 and the Class 6E1 have already been cut up, but these two remain for now.
