Westbound Amtrak "Cardinal" train P051-05 with AMTK P42DC #1 on the point and the usual consist of new baggage car, two sleepers, diner, and 3 coaches, slows down to cross the Big Sandy River bridge (built in the late 1800's) which brings the western end of the Kanawha Subdivision into Kentucky at Catlettsburg for the remaining few miles of the mainline run to Russell.
Kentucky hasn't been lucky with Amtrak. The Floridian and Kentucky Cardinal are gone. The Cardinal runs only three times a week. The City of New Orleans passes through in the middle of the night. Yet, there are still many good views to be seen.
