Power short in the late '70s, the Santa Fe leased some GPs from the Chessie System, as can be seen by the two GP40s trailing ATSF SD40 5004. To avoid numbering confusion, a 9 was placed over the 3 on the roadnumber on the Baltimore & Ohio units' cab sides, changing, for example, B&O 3744 to 9744. This eastbound is seen on December 2nd, 1079, at Woodford, in southern California's Tehachapi Mountains. Power for the train is ATSF SD40 5004 (ex-ATSF 1704), B&O GP40 3744 (as B&O 9744), B&O GP40 3710 (as B&O 9710) and ATSF SD40-2 5105.
