The dirty afternoon sky has all but taken the last remaining light as a loaded coal train blasts out of the open cut coal mine at Sandaoling in north west China. Such is the frequency of these trains at times, there is already another train loading and another empty train in the left of the picture reversing down the other line. Due to the long distances the trains propel, a brakeman sits in a cabin on the last coal wagon and he operates mini mechanical semaphore signals on the roof of his cabin by day and mini coloured light signals by night to relay to the driver of his train what the indication of the signal ahead is displaying.
