Usually it was not a good railfanning day when one of these trains were sighted, but fortunately on Sept. 30, 1991 D&RGW SD’s 5372 and 5508 were taking the derrick train eastward back to Denver after handling derailment duties. The cumbersome and slow-working dinosaur derricks have been replaced with nimble side-boom caterpillars. Some fall colors along the Colorado River near State Bridge, Colo.
