In urban regions, obtaining a right of way for public utilities can require some creative engineering. This was the case when the Philadelphia Electric Company developed its 220 kilovolt system in the mid-20th century. Seeking to run twin 220 kV lines to various substations in north Philadelphia, Peco built transmission towers that straddled the Reading’s West Trenton line for several spans. Here Conrail freight OIEN (Oak Island – Enola) with two nearly-new C40-8’s pauses under two of these towers (note the differences). Other examples of these towers can more readily be seen along the Schuylkill Expressway between Flat Rock Tunnel and City Line Avenue.
