Never the same from one day to the next, Santa Fe’s Fast Mail Express, train 7 and its eastbound counterpart, train 8, were obliged by contract to carry all the mail the U.S Post Office presented as well as any express destined for online delivery. The result was often very long and varied trains, up to 30 cars and more from an assortment of railroads, and including multiple RPOs, deadhead passenger equipment, and, mandated by law, a rider coach for those few passengers who showed up. (Don’t look for it in the public timetable, however.) Despite this burden, number 7, shown just easing out of Kansas City Union Station behind a quartet of Alco PAs led by the 65, will soon be speeding across the Kansas prairie at 70mph and better. At distant Barstow, California, the train will split, one portion continuing on to Los Angeles, the other heading north to Richmond and the Bay Area.
