In a rare, public passenger move over the former Boston and Maine Railroad's West End, Amtrak's Autumn Express heads east past the former JV Tower at Johnsonville, NY. Here, the B&M's Troy Branch (originally the Troy and Boston Railroad) once passed through the foreground and joined the mainline. The Troy Branch was primarily a passenger line for the B&M to Troy, NY. Passenger service ended in 1958, and freight service ended in 1971, after which the tracks were removed and a portion in Troy eventually became a bike path. Needless to say, photographing a passenger train passing this tower is historically significant. Originating at Albany-Rensselaer Station, this train ran to Schenectady, NY, then over Canadian Pacific to Mechanicville, NY before getting onto Pan Am Southern trackage. The train is heading to East Deerfield, MA where it will be turned before returning west.
