The semaphore blade is just starting to drop as Southern Pacific Train 3, the Golden State, speeds south near Vaughn, New Mexico. Rock Island handed off command of the train for the remainder of its journey to Los Angeles some 90 miles ago, in Tucumcari, no doubt much to the relief of passengers who have had to endure Rock Island track conditions since Chicago. Sixteen-year-old E8A 644 is the second of this popular model on the Rock, which also purchased the EMD demonstrator. It will finish out its days in Chicago commuter service and go to scrap by 1980.
Huge Album that Includes over 2,600+ photos of classic passenger trains across USA & Canada before and during the time of Amtrak & VIA Rail. More Images will be Added.

The Rock Island was an also-ran in the markets it served competing the likes of the Santa Fe Super Chief and Burlington Denver Zephyr, but it did its best to put on a good show.
