    Remarks & Notes
Twilight on the "Alphabet Route" in the Lebanon Valley, in a scene scanned from a slide from the collection of the late Hen Westenberger. A Western Maryland SD40 leads a Reading GP35/GP30 combo westbound to Rutherford Yard and beyond. The 7471 was built by EMD in August, 1966. The Alphabet Route got its name from the cooperating railroads competing with the three eastern giants (the B&O, NYC, and PRR.) They were, west to east, NKP-W&LE-P&WV-WM-RDG-CNJ-L&HR-NYNH&H; hence the name, "Alphabet Route." On account of the Penn Central merger in 1968, the creation of the Chessie System in 1972 and Conrail in 1976, the Alphabet Route eventually withered away by the early 1980s.
