Spring is in the air as the Broadway Limited passes through Banks Interlocking, heading toward Harrisburg behind some well-worn E-units. Lead engine No. 444 was built by EMD in June, 1946 (c.n. 3408) as Atlantic Coast Line E7 No. 532. It was rebuilt by EMD after a wreck in July, 1953, upgraded to an E8. The Seaboard Coast Line renumbered it as the 575 after the merger, and Amtrak first numbered it as their 233. After a rebuild in 1974, it was again renumbered, to 444, to make room for the new F40PHs in the 200-series. The 444 was retired in July, 1981.
