Eastbound out of Cumberland. After nearly an hour's delay in downtown Cumberland, a Western Maryland Freight gets the high ball to continue their eastbound run.
Those who have participated in a Lerro Productions night session in the past know that Pete typically sets up a few static scenes and then does a run-by or two, mostly for the benefit of the folks shooting video. Capturing these runs on a still camera is a bit of a challenge, because you can't use flashes. The hot lights used for the night scene are the only available light. Truthfully, a lot of still-shooters just put their cameras down and watch. On this night, I had only about a minute's warning that Pete was going to have the train back up and run through the station area. Fortunately, I had my best camera/lens combo on the tripod at that moment. I quickly got the camera off the tripod, disconnected the remote release, dialed up 8000 ISO, f/2.8 (I never shoot trains at 2.8) and 1/125th. As the train ran through, I shot hand-held, and squeezed off a few individual frames hoping for something usable.....and viola! Not bad for a last-second effort.
