The 1979 Pacific Railroad Society "Mountain Outin" passenger special, with Amtrak SDP40F AMTK 518 and AMTK 517, is rolling westbound towards Bakersfield as it approaches tunnel 1 on Tehachapi Pass. We just met a long SP manifest slowly working uphill at the Beaville siding, and now railfans, occupying just about every vestibule and baggage door, are enjoying the view and wondering if there is another freight waiting for us near Caliente.
