Built over a hundred years ago for the Pennsylvania Railroad, the East River Tunnels are considered the aorta for Amtrak, Long Island Railroad, and New Jersey Transit into Manhattan. In view are two of the four lines that cross the East River. Typically, lines one and three are considered eastbound tracks while lines two and four are westbound (not in view.)
Beyond the tunnels is LIRR's Hunters Point Ave station, which sees limited commuter service during the week and NYCT's 7 subway line. In the coming years, East Side Access is expected to off load some of the burden and will divert a considerable amount of LIRR trains into Grand Central Terminal.
